AssemblyAI vs Deepgram: which workflow fits?
Compare AssemblyAI and Deepgram for recorded transcription or live speech. Check speaker labels, model constraints, billing units, and a same-audio trial before choosing.
How to decide
AssemblyAI vs Deepgram: choose a task first
For an existing recording, shortlist AssemblyAI if its documented transcript-enrichment pipeline matches your required output. Shortlist Deepgram if word-level speaker attribution and its speech model choices fit your integration. For live speech, evaluate each provider's streaming path separately. These are trial starting points, not accuracy or speed rankings. AssemblyAI examples distinguish recorded and streaming workflows.
Compare the same processing mode
| Decision | AssemblyAI | Deepgram |
|---|---|---|
| Recorded speaker labels | The recorded API uses speaker_labels and returns utterances |
Diarization assigns speaker labels to words |
| Live speech | Start from its real-time documentation; do not copy recorded parameters blindly | Check streaming diarizer support independently of batch |
| A constraint to test | Short contributions and overlapping voices can impair speaker separation | The documented v2 diarizer is batch-only; requesting it for streaming fails validation |
| Identity | Generic speaker labels need a separate identification step for names | A speaker number alone does not establish a person's identity |
The AssemblyAI label-speakers guide describes speaker-count settings and difficult audio. Deepgram's diarization documentation recommends diarize_model; batch and streaming can resolve latest differently. Pin the supported version when reproducibility matters.
Compare cost on one workload
Use the same recording duration, mode, model tier, language, channels, and enabled features. Compare the same plan class, such as pay-as-you-go, rather than a discounted contract against a public rate.
| Cost check | What to align |
|---|---|
| Time unit | Convert a per-minute rate to an hourly rate by multiplying by 60 |
| Input | Record audio duration and channel count; AssemblyAI's pricing notes multichannel billing per channel |
| Options | Itemize speaker features, enrichment, and other selected charges for the chosen mode |
| Account | Verify trial credits, promotions, rounding, and committed-plan terms before estimating spend |
Check AssemblyAI pricing and Deepgram pricing for the exact configuration. This page does not quote a universal cheaper provider or an account-specific bill.
Run a small acceptance trial
- Use an audio sample you are allowed to process, with a checked transcript and known speaker turns.
- Run recorded against recorded, or stream the same input into both streaming integrations. Record model versions and feature flags.
- Check missing words, punctuation, speaker boundaries, overlap, and timestamps against the reference. Treat unknown labels as unknown people.
- For streaming, measure time to useful output and finalization; include reconnects and interrupted audio. For recordings, check completion and error handling.
- Compare actual billed usage and review effort. Reject a configuration that meets the demo but fails your required language, privacy, or failure-handling conditions.
WWW Agents has not run this comparative trial. Accuracy, latency, retention suitability, and total workload cost remain unverified. Read the AssemblyAI Product page and Deepgram Product page for introductions; this comparison also answers the reverse search, Deepgram vs AssemblyAI.

Before you decide
A feature list is not a reliable substitute for a scoped workflow trial.
