Claude Code alternatives: choose by workflow
Choose a Claude Code alternative by identifying the missing work surface: task delegation, AI-native editing, GitHub-native assistance, or a different terminal and model ecosystem.
How to decide
Start with the actual constraint
If the team wants less back-and-forth and more bounded task delegation, evaluate Codex. If the team wants AI to live in the editor, evaluate Cursor or Windsurf. If a familiar GitHub and multi-IDE environment matters most, evaluate GitHub Copilot. If the evaluation is driven by a different command-line and provider ecosystem, evaluate Gemini CLI with the same project rules.
Choose by workflow
- Delegated repository tasks: Codex when a clear brief and reviewable result are enough.
- AI-native editor: Cursor or Windsurf when developers steer from files and tabs.
- GitHub and IDE continuity: GitHub Copilot when adoption disruption must stay low.
- CLI ecosystem fit: Gemini CLI when its current access and tooling match the team.
Avoid a false migration
Do not move because another Product has a longer feature list. Trial one issue that requires reading code, making a multi-file change, and running checks. Measure instruction adherence, review burden, and whether the team can reproduce the result.
Primary sources

Before you decide
A feature list is not a reliable substitute for a scoped workflow trial.
